All That is Left of Me is You

Hannah Cohen, 2023, Hand-knit Sweaters

and Mixed Media

This installation sculpture is a soft-sculpture mixed media piece using knitting as the main medium. This work weaves together personal influence and interconnectedness by exploring the impact my grandmother has made on my life and art practice. I abstract and amplify the ways in which we as individuals are impacted and influenced by craft, culture, and place-making as a way of creating collective memory. The artwork explores how these types of exchanges shape who we are as individuals through the sharing and embracing of knowledge and personal practice. The work is accompanied by a written thesis available to read here.

This piece was installed in 2023 in the Edith Feldenheimer Gallery during the Reed College 2023 Spring Senior Thesis Exhibition.

In supporting this artwork, a seventy-two page written thesis, All That is Left of Me is You, further explores the methodology behind how personal influence and memory-making can impact identity formation. The idea of interconnectedness as emphasized through the artwork are supported within this document.

I support the method of making of this work through the idea of agency and identity through mark-making, as discussed by David Rosand in his book Drawing Acts: Studies in Graphic Expression and Representation. My work utilizes the medium of knitting as an extension of this large concept, using form, color, and display to further support the idea of interconnectedness.

Knowledge is shared across relationships and through generations, shaping the ways in which we navigate the world with the skills and awareness that we grow over time through strengthening relationships. All That is Left of Me is You emphasizes the ways in which we are impacted by and impact those around us.
